Year 9 pupils at Tong Leadership Academy attended a STEM Challenge Day to put their problem-solving skills to the test.

Held at Leeds City College, pupils were posed with a number of challenges which relied on their knowledge of STEM subjects: Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths.

The expertly devised challenges spanned everything from using E-fit software to catch criminals, to identifying medical conditions using diagnostic technology.

In addition, pupils were split into mixed school groups in order to problem solve with a new set of peers who they had not met before. One of the teams which contained two Tong pupils won awards for ‘Best Teamwork’ and were the E-fit Challenge winners.

Year 9 pupil and award winner Aaliyah commented:

“I enjoyed making new friends and building up my confidence; the diagnostic test was the best and it has made me want to be a doctor in the future!”

With ‘Ambition’ being one of Tong’s STAR values, this interactive day inspired many pupils to pursue careers within STEM subjects which they did not know existed before the visit.
